Lots of stones on the plate - Inner Oak Therapy Psychotherapy

Our Approach

At Inner Oak Therapy, we believe in the inherent value and worth of every person. We recognise that each individual holds the potential for growth, healing, and change — and that therapy can be a powerful tool in unlocking that potential. We take an integrative relational approach, with person-centred therapy as our core foundation. This allows us to build strong, trusting therapeutic relationships while drawing on a range of evidence-based modalities, including psychodynamic therapy, transactional analysis, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and compassion-focused therapy. We may also incorporate somatic (body-based) and experiential methods to support holistic mental health and the mind-body connection.

We will work together at a pace that feels right for you, allowing trust to develop naturally. Our sessions provide a caring, supportive, confidential, and non-judgemental space where you can safely explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Whether you are facing anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, trauma, or other personal challenges, we will collaborate to uncover the possible root causes and patterns that may be impacting your life. Through this process, you will not only gain deeper understanding and insight but also find opportunities for healing, growth, and positive change.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is an evidence-based approach approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the treatment of trauma, including PTSD and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD). EMDR has been extensively researched and shown to be highly effective in helping individuals process and recover from traumatic experiences. In addition to trauma-related conditions, clinical studies have found EMDR beneficial in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. It has also shown promising results in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), addictions, phobias, chronic pain, and other psychological difficulties.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy and counselling are often used interchangeably, with only subtle distinctions between them. Both are commonly known as forms of talking therapy, offering a supportive space to explore emotional, psychological, and relational challenges. At Inner Oak Therapy, we offer an integrative approach tailored to your individual needs. This means we draw on a range of therapeutic modalities to create a personalised, flexible service—because we recognise that each person is unique and deserves a therapy experience that reflects that.

All of our work is underpinned by the person-centred approach, developed by Carl Rogers. This approach is based on the belief that individuals have an innate capacity for healing and growth. Sometimes, however, life’s difficulties can make it hard to access that inner strength. Therapy offers the support, empathy, and safe environment needed to begin uncovering the answers that already lie within. We are here to walk alongside you as you explore what’s holding you back and move towards positive change.

Here are some of the issues you may be experiencing that Inner Oak Therapy can support you with — please note, this is not an exhaustive list:

Grief

Grief can feel overwhelming — at times, it may seem insurmountable, leaving you with a sense of sinking or emotional paralysis. At Inner Oak Therapy, we offer a safe, compassionate space to help you process your loss and develop healthy coping strategies for the difficult emotions that arise. Together, we will navigate the complex and often fluctuating emotions of grief — from sadness and guilt to anger, numbness, or moments of relief. Whether you’re facing a recent bereavement or struggling with the ongoing impact of loss, we will support you through the highs and lows, including challenging times such as anniversaries, birthdays, or significant events where your loved one’s absence is deeply felt. Our approach is always gentle, caring, and non-judgemental, tailored to your pace and emotional needs.

Depression / Anxiety

Depression, anxiety, and fear are among the most common yet deeply distressing emotions we face. They can make the world feel dim, heavy, and overwhelming — as though the brightness and joy that once existed are slipping away. Life may begin to feel smaller, more isolating, and increasingly frightening, with a constant cloud of negative or self-critical thoughts growing louder and more persistent.

At Inner Oak Therapy, we believe there is hope — and light. Together, we can begin the journey of restoring your motivation, clarity, and emotional wellbeing. Through a supportive, non-judgemental therapeutic relationship, we will help you reconnect with your strengths, gain new perspective, and gently shift those inner narratives. With time and support, it is possible to rediscover the colour and vibrancy of life, and to replace critical self-talk with self-compassion, confidence, and resilience.

Trauma / PTSD C-PTSD

Trauma is often described as “Big T” or “little t” trauma — but at Inner Oak Therapy, we don’t believe in ranking your pain. Trauma is trauma. What matters most is not how it is labelled, but how it’s affecting you. The body and brain respond to overwhelming experiences in complex ways, and those effects can be deeply disruptive to daily life.

You may notice changes in sleep, appetite, or personal hygiene. You might find yourself withdrawing from loved ones, feeling on edge, or startling more easily. Perhaps you feel numb, disconnected, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve you. However it manifests, you are not alone — and your experience is valid.

At Inner Oak Therapy, we offer a compassionate, non-judgemental space to process trauma at your pace. Together, we will work to understand how your experiences are impacting your life, and begin to reduce their emotional hold. Through an integrative and trauma-informed approach, we can help you reclaim a sense of safety, sleep more peacefully, build stronger relationships, and feel freer in both mind and body.

Stress

Some stress can be beneficial — it motivates us to act, helps us respond to challenges, and prepares us for important events like exams, interviews, or deadlines. This is part of the body’s natural fight-or-flight response, where hormones like adrenaline and cortisol are released to sharpen focus and boost energy.

However, when stress becomes chronic — constant and long-term — it can take a serious toll on both physical and mental health. Prolonged high levels of cortisol are linked to issues such as weakened immunity, digestive problems, anxiety, low mood, and increased risk of heart-related conditions. This is why chronic stress is often referred to as the silent killer.

At Inner Oak Therapy, we will work together to identify the sources of stress in your life and understand how they are affecting your wellbeing. We will help you develop and integrate practical, evidence-based techniques to manage and reduce stress, empowering you to restore balance and resilience. Through tailored support, you can begin to feel more in control, more energised, and more at ease in your daily life.

Anger

Anger; a perfectly common, healthy human emotion, however, it stops being healthy when it begins to impact on your physical health, relationships and work life. At Inner Oak Therapy we will work with body sensations (somatically) to not only deal with the manifestation of anger but we will work together to help you understand the triggers and root cause of the anger. Together in an non-judgmental, safe space we will identify where this ball of anger is stemming from, or just seems to explode from and work from that place to reduce and manage the anger. We will also work together to heal any broken relationships as a result of the anger.

Loss of Identity

Struggling to know who you are at the moment, or for some weeks, months, even years? At various stages of life, we need to adapt to the changes around us and within us. This can feel extremely overwhelming, as though you are losing part of yourself—the you that you once knew. At Inner Oak Therapy, our commitment to you is that we will journey with you through the confusion with care, empathy and sensitivity, so that you will be able to find your inner strength to process the changes and regain your sense of identity.

No specific issue

Sometimes, you don’t need a specific issue to begin psychotherapy. You may simply feel that something isn’t quite right or want to deepen your self-understanding, personal growth, and self-reflection. At Inner Oak Therapy, we provide a safe, supportive space along with the skills and expertise to help you explore these feelings and achieve your goals.
